'Having a Stroke as a New Mom Changed Everything, but I'm Treating It Like a Gift'

A prospective model soon to be law graduate were expecting a new life together on the California coast. What they weren't expecting was a baby...and a stroke all in a time span of 6 months. Katherine Wolf was a new mom, living the crazy busy 'new mom life' when one morning in April 2008, her whole life changed. Katherine suffered a massive brain stem stroke from the rupturing of a brain arteriovenous malformation (BVM). She went through surgery and spent 2 months in a coma. Not exactly how every mom pictures their first year with their baby.

I chose this article because Katherine Wolf has not only learned to thrive with her disabilities, but has committed to teaching and helping others thrive as well. Her and her husband started a faith-based non-profit called Hope Heals. It is a camp for families with disabilities that brings a community together and lets them know they're not alone in the struggles that they're facing.

In class, we are constantly reminded to look at the whole client. We aren't there just to get muscles working again, but to make sure those muscles can work towards a purpose. What I love about this specific case is that Katherine calls upon her deep faith in Jesus Christ as reason for the life she lives. Spirituality is one of the factors that play a huge role in a client's healing process and quality of life. It is evident that Katherine has a strong spiritual life and feels she is thriving because of it. I highly recommend reading this article and watching the video that goes along with it because it really is such a picture of hope. It's the kind of picture I want to draw for someone else as I embark on this journey of becoming an occupational therapist.
